Strapped for time? Need motivation? Here are 8 ideas to inspire you to get active:

1. Turn your commute or journey to school into a workout

If school or work is not too far away, switch from driving or using public transport to cycling, running, or walking instead.

2. Sneak in 10 at a time

If it's hard for you to find half an hour or more for exercise, squeeze in 10 minutes at a time. Try 10 minutes of stretches and sit-ups in the morning, a brisk 10-minute walk with the dog, and 10 minutes of weights in the evening. Get everyone involved!

3. Start “active socialising”

Sign up your children to a sports club – tennis or swimming are great fun. Or change your weekly mums' get-together from a chat in the coffee shop to a walk in the park.

4. Multi-task

Keep active while you’re doing something else. For example:

When listening to the radio, get the whole family practising a dance routine.
Buy a mini trampoline and get jumping in front of the TV.
Have a quick game of hide and seek in the TV ad breaks.
Power-walk to the shops – or to school.
Jog with the dog, rather than walking.

5. Plan active holidays and family day trips

Plan your family holiday around an activity such as cycling, walking, kayaking or even yoga. Or grab the kids and go on a weekend day trip, such as a walking tour of a nearby town or city, biking in the park or rowing on the river.

6. Be a big kid yourself

Next time you're trying to figure out what to do with your kids, grandkids, nieces or nephews, think active: visit a climbing gym, the wave pool or play a round of Frisbee.

Rather than playing another computer game, try out the outdoors GPS treasure hunt, geo-caching.

7. Do it for a cause

Participate in a charity walk, jog, bike ride or climb, and keep fit while helping out a good cause. Many events are suitable for the whole family, or have separate heats for kids. With careful planning, you may be able to take part in one event a month!

8. Encourage a little friendly competition

Everyone loves sticker charts, so start an activity chart for the whole family. Award small stickers for everyday exercise, such as walking to school, and big stars for extra achievements such as a long bike ride.
