Get your family out and about

Plan your route in advance and check how long it should take.
Choose a trail that’s suitable for your fitness levels: beginners look for shorter routes on level terrain; longer routes with hills are good if you’re already an active family.
Work up to more challenging trails by gradually taking on longer and steeper routes.
If you’re walking on your own, tell someone where you’re going and when you expect to be back.
Pack a comfortable, lightweight backpack with a route map, water, insect repellent, suncream, sunglasses, hat, gloves, waterproof jacket, extra jumpers, a torch, a penknife, a whistle, bandages, a mobile phone and snacks – how about whipping up a tasty sandwich lunch?
