Do you, or your kids, always reach for the snack cupboard before lunch or dinner? Then it’s time to boost your family’s fibre intake. Not only do high-fibre foods keep you all fuller for longer, they also maintain a healthy digestive system, and a healthy body weight.

Fibre is found in fruit and vegetables, oats, wholegrain pasta, cereal and rice, wholemeal bread (check out Warburtons great range), seeds and nuts, beans and pulses. This means there are lots of ways for the whole family to get all the fibre they need!

How to eat more fibre

4 easy ways to increase your fibre intake:

1. Think wholegrain

Choose wholegrain varieties of bread, cereals, pasta, rice and couscous. Wholegrain pasta, for example, has more than twice the fibre of traditional pasta. Start by trying half-and-half, and gradually shift the balance in favour of wholegrain varieties.

2. Tuck into beans and pulses

Beans and pulses, including lentils and chickpeas, are excellent sources of dietary fibre. Mexican, Indian, Asian and Tuscan dishes all use a mixture of fibre-rich beans and pulses, so why not get creative and try something new?

3. Eat fruit whole

Eating fruit with the skin on is an easy way to increase the fibre in your diet. Whole fruit has a lot more fibre than fruit juice – a glass of apple juice gives you 0.5g of fibre while a medium apple gives you over 4g.

4. Focus on vegetables

Give vegetables at least half the space on your plate when you have lunch and dinner. Snack on carrot sticks, cucumber, peppers or celery throughout the day. If you dip them in low-fat hummus, you get extra fibre from the chickpeas too!

When you up your fibre intake, do it gradually and increase the amount of water you drink.
