Christmas cake decorating
Can you hear those jingle bells? Christmas is just around the corner! If you’re anything like us, you’ve had a busy stir-up-Sunday, and your Christmas cake is merrily maturing. The thing you need to do now is decorate it!

Easy and delicious cream cheese icing
Quick, easy and delicious, this icing is that the kids will love to get involved in (and help lick the whisk after!). Once made, just smother it over the top of your cake and encourage the little to add glittery sugar, chocolate characters and silver balls to make your cake shine. Why not mix it up and write the family name on the cake too so there’s no confusion when Santa comes to visit!
You will need
- 200g cream cheese
- 100g icing sugar
- 100g Flora Buttery
- 1 tsp vanilla essence
- Beat the Flora Buttery and cream cheese together until soft.
- Sift in the icing sugar (that way your icing won’t have any lumps!) and mix together well. You can use a stand mixer or a standard wooden spoon for this.
- Use a palette knife to spread it over the top of your cake. Now, it’s time for the kids to get stuck into the decorating!
Winter Wonderland Cake
This tasty cake is a doddle to make and a guaranteed family pleaser! We sprinkled icing sugar and added white Maltesers to ours to give it a real Winter Wonderland feel, but this would also work well with white chocolate buttons or crushed up candy canes.
You will need
- 400g white chocolate
- 200ml double cream
- 4 tbsp. icing sugar
- One bag of white Maltesers
- Chop the chocolate into evenly sized chunks.
- While you’re doing that, heat the cream up in the microwave for 2-3 minutes. It needs to be hot, but not boiling. If you don’t have a microwave, just heat the cream on the hob.
- Once the cream is warm, pour it over the chocolate, and stir until combined. It should have the consistency of a thick sauce.
- Leave to cool until it reaches the right consistency. Then drizzle it all over your cake.
- While the ganache is still warm, sprinkle the icing sugar over the top. Then, gently stick the Maltesers into the icing.
Five Star Christmas Cupcakes
Royal icing can be a little tricky, but letting the kids cut their favourite Christmas shapes out of it makes it all the more fun – we made stars with our leftover icing!
You will need
- 1 tbsp. of jam (we used Apricot)
- One pack of ready-to-roll royal icing
- One pack of edible gold and silver glitter
- Knead your royal icing until it’s nice and soft. Then roll it out a clean surface dusted with icing sugar until it’s (roughly) the thickness of a £1 coin.
- Gently heat the jam up in a pan until it’s turned sticky and syrupy.
- Using cutters of your choice, gently get the kids to cut out an icing shape of their choice
- Once you’ve cut out your shapes, paint side of each with the warm sticky jam. Then, gently glue each the cake.
- Sprinkle the top with silver edible glitter, and you’re done!
