On 1st November 2012 we met at The Langham Hotel to celebrate a group of very special women at the Love Your Heart Awards.

We had a wealth of very strong and inspiring entries, but after a lengthy deliberation process, the winners were selected…

Flora Pro.Activ Heart Hero: Sylvia Hillier
Since discovering that she has high cholesterol, Sylvia has been instrumental in our campaigns to raise awareness of heart disease amongst other women, featuring in our advertising campaign and offering her story as a case study to magazines and newspapers to help warn others of the risk of raised cholesterol. In addition to this, she regularly uses her own Facebook page to spread awareness of heart disease amongst her friends and chats to them about how they can lower their cholesterol too. Smooth Radio Heart Hero
The Smooth Radio winner, who wishes to remain anonymous, suffers the debilitating effects of an illness called Lymphedema, yet still inspires others to think about their health. Several weeks ago, they found out they had raised cholesterol and, at the same time, their sister suffered a heart attack. Fortunately their sister survived but this close call motivated the winner to change their own life including lowering their cholesterol in order to set an example to their sister. They have overhauled their diet and are enjoying the positive effects on their health!

Public Heart Hero: Claire Rumble
Claire amassed an impressive collection of nominations and is a truly deserving winner. Since suffering three heart attacks in 2009, she has tirelessly campaigned to raise awareness of heart health issues and has raised more than £20,000 for the British Heart Foundation. Her efforts are always interesting and innovative, most recently she has run classes on CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) and will shortly be running an adapted version for children of comprehensive school age. She is an inspiration to us all.

Public Heart Hero: Marlene Godwin
Since tragically losing her father to heart failure, Marlene has worked tirelessly to do something for others going through a similar experience. She has climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, run marathons and organised walks, bakes and parties to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation. She has involved the whole family in her efforts, making them all aware of how important it is to eat properly, exercise and to look after themselves. She has gone from being the kind of person who takes the car everywhere to being someone who walks, climbs and enjoys life in the outdoors... all while raising money for her favourite heart charity, in memory of her father.

Healthcare Professional Heart Hero: Dr Liza Morton
Dr Liza Morton was born fighting a heart condition, which meant her first pacemaker was fitted when she was just 11 days old. She spent much of her early life in hospital, with surgery and early pacemakers limiting her physicality as a child. Aged just 12, she underwent surgery to repair a hole in her heart and, two months ago, she was fitted with her tenth pacemaker. Despite the huge adversity she has faced, Liza has built a hugely successful career in Psychology and has published on the psychological impact of ACHD (Adult Congenital Heart Disease or living with a heart condition from birth) academically and for The Somerville Foundation to improve ACHD care in Scotland.

British Heart Foundation Heart Hero: Kay Attwood
Kay has been a brilliant supporter, volunteer and fundraiser for the BHF for 6 years, since recovering from a heart attack in her forties. Her story has helped raise awareness of BHF health and fundraising campaigns in local press, and Kay has spoken on radio and given TV interviews about her experiences on behalf of the heart charity. She’s an active member of her local Camberley Supporter Group and even organised a flashmob of 30 people to perform a 8 minute Sixties inspired dance masterpiece to help raise awareness – and £2,400 – for the BHF.
