Eating before exercise: are you getting it right?
Flora is shining a light on the biggest food mistakes Brits make before exercising, as we return as an official partner of the TCS London Marathon 2026 and head out on a nationwide Food Tour.
Our research with 2,000 regular exercisers found that four in ten people aren’t sure if what they eat before a workout is actually helping them. From coffee and biscuits to chocolate and pasta, many are reaching for quick fixes moments before exercising.
To help make pre-workout nutrition easier to understand, we teamed up with GP and Sport & Exercise expert Dr Amos Ogunkoya to identify the top three pre-workout food pitfalls and explain why they matter: training without sufficient energy intake, relying on quick sugar fixes, and mistiming nutrition, all of which can affect how people feel during exercise.
Our research supports Dr Amos, highlighting the common pre-workout food mistakes, including training on an empty stomach (27%), skipping breakfast altogether (46%), and relying on quick-fix foods like biscuits, chocolate and energy drinks just before exercising - choices that can leave people feeling less energised during exercise.
As part of our partnership with the TCS London Marathon, we took this message on the road with the Flora Food Tour. We offered free Flora flapjacks and recipe inspiration across the UK (Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Bristol, Cardiff, and a show-stopping finale in London for The TCS London Marathon).
The goal? To show how simple, nutritionally balanced food choices can help you feel better when you move.
