What do you do on Earth Day?
Not sure how to mark this occasion? Here are some simple and fun Earth Day activities that you can try out this year with your kids, including easy Earth Day crafts and educational activities:
- Plant and grow your own foods. Kids love to get messy and hands-on with activities so why not try getting outside. Teach your kids about sustainability by encouraging them to plant their own herb garden, fruits and vegetables that they can grow, care for and cook with in the future.
- Help the local wildlife. Get crafty by making homemade birdseed feeders using bird seed, gelatine, corn syrup and water. Hang them with old string from trees or fences in your garden for the local birds to come and enjoy.
- Involve your kids in the recycling. Try sensory play by getting your kids to organise the recycling into different material types. Once they have finished, make a trip to your local recycling centre to put all the materials in the right place to be recycled.
- Upcycle old bottles and containers. Using these materials to create new, functional objects is a great way to give them a new lease of life. Create a make-up brush holder from an old jam jar, or use old Flora spread containers as plant pots. Your children can decorate them to make them look great, too.
- Go on a nature walk. Play games like ‘I Spy’ to encourage your children to spot things out in nature. You could also use the walk as an opportunity to get crafty. Take bark rubbings of different trees and collect fallen leaves, twigs and more to create art at home.
Now you know what Earth Day is, when to celebrate it and what to do on Earth Day. With these Earth Day activities you can be sure to involve your kids and encourage them to be a part of the preservation of our natural world.
