Let’s not beat around the bush, we know that the use of palm oil in food is a controversial issue. This is due to environmentally and economically damaging practices employed by some unethical producers that lead to deforestation, the destruction of habitats of endangered species, a contribution to climate change, and the exploitation of workers and child labour.

The good news is, it doesn’t have to be that way - and Flora Plant B*tter is the proof.

We take environmental and ethical issues extremely seriously and are proud to say that every ounce of palm oil in Flora Plant B*tter is sustainable and certified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). Not only that, but we are constantly pushing for positive, transformative change in palm oil production. Our palm oil policy, list of mills and a transparent grievances procedure are all available here.

But if palm oil has this reputation and we have to go to all this effort just to make you feel that it’s ok to eat Flora Plant B*tter, why not use another oil? The answer is, there is no other oil like palm oil.

It’s remarkable stuff, which is why it’s so popular across industries from food to pharma to biofuel. Palm oil is in close to 50% of the packaged products we find in supermarkets: everything from pizza, doughnuts and chocolate, to deodorant, shampoo, toothpaste and lipstick. It’s also what makes Flora Plant B*tter a delicious, creamy and environmentally-friendly alternative for dairy butter.

Palm oil is semi-solid at room temperature, which makes Flora Plant B*tter easy to spread. It’s odourless and taste-neutral, which allows the other ingredients’ flavours to shine through. It’s virtually trans-fat free, which makes it better for our bodies than dairy.

It’s also an incredibly efficient crop, producing at least four times more oil per acre than any equivalent vegetable oil crop. In fact, palm oil supplies 35% of the world’s vegetable oil demand using just 10% of the land. Stop using palm oil and shift to more land-hungry, dairy products and you create a bigger ecological problem in another part of the world. Not to mention millions of people losing their livelihoods.

So, yes, we acknowledge the issues around palm oil but we will continue to use it and use it well. Because we believe that, with our exacting ethical standards, it is the most environmentally-friendly, logical and, importantly, delicious choice for Flora Plant B*tter.
